432MHz Affiliated Societies Contest 1997 This contest continues to be popular with the number of entries remaining virtually the same as the previous year, (30 Single Operator, 7 Multi-Operator.) Poor conditions prevailing in the week prior to the contest continued and on contest day they were generally reported as "flat to poor" with the most generous description being "average". Erik Gedvilas, G8XVJ, won the single operator fixed station section by a large margin ahead of Ela Martyr, G6HKM, whose more accurate log just edged Gerry Schoof, G1SWH, into third place. The comment made by Roger Piper, G3MEH, "I think I'd rather watch paint dry" summed up his views on poor conditions and what he perceived as lack of support from UK stations. Fortunately for Aylesbury Vale RS he still submitted his entry which together with their other two team members, G3YLC and G0ODQ enabled them to be placed second in the AFS section. The entry from Erik, G8XVJ, on behalf of the Warrington contest group won the AFS section. South Birmingham RS, G8OHM, maintained their form from last year and repeated their success by winning the multi-operator section ahead of Harwell ARS, G3PIA, who were placed second. Congratulations to all Zonal winners, to G3RHH and G4FOH who were placed first and second respectively in the 25W to a single antenna and to PE1MPI who was the highest placed overseas operator. The VHFCC are encouraged by more than 50% of the single operator stations and 80% of the multi-operator stations submitting electronic logs on disk or via email. Any worries that such logs are scrutinised more thoroughly are unfounded; in fact high scoring "paper entries" which have clearly been computer generated are, if anything, more likely to attract closer attention from the adjudicators. The change of the scoring method from radial points to 1pt/km caused some confusion this year and several entries had to be re-scored resulting in delays to the adjudication.
