70 MHz Trophy 1997 Almost all entrants who expressed an opinion were pleased with the new date for this contest - 10th August coincides with the run-up to the Perseids meteor shower, and some DX was worked on this mode. Activity was up again from last year, as was the level of entries in both sections; many people commented on good propagation conditions for the first time for a few years. Familiar callsigns popped up from unfamiliar places þ Northern Lights were in Fife, A1CG went to Cornwall, G3WMR in Jersey, and GM4DHF/P from their Perseids Dxpedition site in Orkney. Some were more successful than others þ the closely-contested Open section went to A1CG (G4ZAP/P) in Cornwall, beating Northern Lights and Warrington CG. GM4DHF/P were too far from the action in IO89, but did give many people their best DX and a new county or square. Five Bells' other team, GM4SIV/P were at their more familiar site on the Mull of Galloway and came in fourth. The Single-Operator section table looks familiar, with Steve G4AEQ narrowly beating Andy G4PIQ for the top slot; Tony G3SKR in third and John G3XDY in fourth. The 25W/single antenna award goes to Steve G0AEV. A word to the wise - several teams changed places at the top of the Open section due to points deducted for logging errors. The points claimed for a QSO are always disallowed if any error is found in the information logged. If youþre looking for a 10% improvement in score for next year, you could do worse than sharpen up your logging accuracy.
