Christmas Cumulatives – December 1997

As usual, there was some confusion about the scoring for this contest – and again as usual, those who got it wrong had their logs re-scored by your adjudicator.

One of the good things about this event is that it attracts entries from some stations who don’t often appear in our results tables – and band winners are different every year. This time, Dave Edwards G7RAU (IO90) led the Single-Operator field on 144MHz, with John Lemay G4ZTR (JO01) in second. Gerard Vervenne PA0GHB (JO11) gets the foreign-entrant certificate, and Peter Craig G7ULL (JO01) the 25W/single antenna award.

50MHz only attracted 7 entrants, with disappointingly low QSO numbers. Dave Hewitt G8ZRE (IO83) was band leader (and runner-up in the Overall table), with David Hobro G4IDF (IO82) in second place. 70MHz was also poorly supported, but band-stalwarts John Livesey G0JJL (IO83) and Derek Thom G3NKS (IO81) made the best of the little activity there was.

The 432MHz spoils go to Stewart Cooper GM4AFF (IO86), who also gets the Overall title, by virtue of being the only station to put in a 4-band entry. PA0GHB was on Stewart’s tail, with Charlie Jordan G0PZO (IO83) in third.

Only 3 entries in the Open section – Ian Carter G0GRI/P won out from IO81, with Red Rose ARG M1CAL (IO83) in second place. Bob Edgar G0KYS/P (JO02), although third overall, easily won the fourth session, and it would be churlish not to award him a certificate for this achievement. There is no Overall table in the Open section this year, because all the Open entries were 144MHz-only.

Overall, then, fewer QSOs and fewer entrants than previous years. Some of this is undoubtedly down to the poor weather and propagation, although some moderate DX was worked on 144MHz on the 29^th.
