2nd 1.8 MHz Contest 2007
This was a fantastic contest entry - with 103 logs received plus 2
checklogs from ON5JD and UA9MQR. This is the highest quantity of logs
for over seven years, and is an increase of 32% on the 1st event in
February 2007. The contest is clearly popular, but there were some
comments from competitors suggesting that the last hour was a little
slow going.
Good openings to the USA and to Russia were experienced (although you
had to ensure that you didn’t miss out of working the Eastern
European and Russian stations before they went to bed!). John K1ESE was
a welcome new entrant. He was testing out a newly installed 2el fixed
full-sized quad for 160m.
In Section A, (UK), the leader and winner of the Victor Desmond
trophy and also the Maitland Trophy is Clive Penna GM3POI from way up
in Orkney. Someone really needs to seriously challenge this guy and
stop his shack shelf from being overburdened with all this trophy
hardware. Who will it be in 2008? Clive scored 1093 points and
had a clear 32 point lead over runner-up Peter Hobbs, G3LET, who was
using his very high sloping wire, with newly installed ground radials
system. In third spot was Justin Snow G4TSH, just 20 points behind
Peter. Justin travelled up to Suffolk for the night to use Bob
G4BAH’s super station.
In Section B (Overseas), the winner is Paul O’Kane EI5DI.
Paul had a huge 198 point lead over second placed Rolfe Salme SM5MX. In
third position was Bart Bzymek SQ1K.
It was interesting to note that there were some easy points lost by
many of the leading stations. A lot of these were due to simple logging
errors (wrong districts or incorrect well-known callsigns logged) which
could have been easily rectified. Even well respected contesters fell
foul on this front. Believe me, it pays to check your log before
submission.
Thanks to all who took part, and I look forward to seeing you all (and
subsequently receiving your accurate logs) in the 1st topband contest
of 2008.

SOAPBOX
G0MTN
Struggled to hear some UK stations with my antenna system. Glad to work
some 'relative' DX. After a couple of hours I drifted back to 80m for
the LZ contest, but condx were poor. Then followed a final play on 160
with slowing rates I opted for bed instead of a final few QSOs!
G3GLL
SD and Winkey worked fine. Slow after the first hour and a half so gave up about 23:00
G3HEJ
Came on late, but lots of stations, inc USA were worked. Admit SD was a joy to use !
G3HKO
(QRP) Seemed hard going with 5w. Back to endfed next year. Many thanks
to all especially the OP who gave me big signal reports - was he
kidding??!
G3JRM (Op. G4RLS)
Some noisy condx which sounded like local line noise. It cleared riefly
then returned with a vengeance. I also made the error of not checking
the band on super duper (set to 20m) until halfway through- hence 3
dupes made by one dope. Ah well!!
G3KLH
Unable to read many stations due to high noise level
G3LDI
Coping with an S-8 noise level from local 32kV lines on this band is
soul-destroying, causing me to ask for repeats and also missing quit a
number of possibles! As for working USA stations, forget it! Plus I
started out without importing the RSGB section list, so wasted 15
minutes or so trying to do that! It was very slow so could have
finished at midnight.
G3LET
Rather noisy, but quite a lot of DX signals still audible, a gratifying
proportion of which gave me No 001! I'd spent Saturday putting
out 20 x 120ft ground wires to the NW, which seem to have made quite an
improvement on Tx and Rx. All hand logged and keyed. A couple of
Caribbean stations seemed to think CQWW had started early and gave what
I'm sure was their CQ Zone number. Several OEs gave area codes
but I didn't include these in the submitted log for fear of causing the
patient adjudicator confusion!
G3LIK
Had very high noise level all evening, S7. Good signals from GM land
G3PDH
Nice little contest but 3 hrs is enough until midnight - too slow thereafter
G3RSD
Used SD - worked perfectly. I Had strong hash noise which stopped precisely at 2300z
G3SJJ
UK and EU activity seemed lower this year, plus some bad static
crashes. Antenna height of 57ft just isn't competitive for longer haul
stuff.
G3UFY
I tried a very bent dipole, centre at abt 35ft, in place of usual
vertical loop in hopes of reducing local noise. Better, but still over
S9 all the time, so mostly S & P.
G3UJE
Only managed to get started at 2245 due to another social engagement.
Apologies if the earlier embibing affected the readability of my CW!
Huge QRN/rain static at S9+ here in the northwest which made copy of
G's difficult and DX impossible. Altogether not a good contest
for me!
G3VYI
Lots of activity but no DX worked here some QRN, some new calls good to hear. SD perfect and worked EI5DI !!
G3WRR
I haven't done a 160m contest for years. Not a serious entry - but did
enjoy it. Not helped by one of the cats taking a stroll along the
keyboard at a critical moment!
G3XGC
Very enjoyable despite fairly poor conditions I enjoyed using SD in this contest
G3YMC
(QRP) Just a little entry, I had not intended to do this contest but
wanted to check out my vertical ready for CQWW so just a few calls.
G3ZGC/A
Operating from G3LLK's QTH. Thanks Gus for letting me use your FB
antenna system. I signed /A as its the licence recommendation. I got a
lot of stick locally about that! Good contest. Sorry I QRMed G4RCG at
one point!
G4BUW
Good conditions into E and S Europe. This is the first contest
entry I have personally submitted in over 20 years. Can't wait
'til the next one!
G4DDL
Very QRN at the end but better than usual for me. A couple of mistakes
and 2 dupes from stations that insisted I had not worked them!!!
G4EBK
Started well S&P worked all the loud ones then down hill after
that. Calling does not produce many results with inv vee bent dipole at
30ft ctr. Only six Q's in the last hour.
G4FAL
It was all looking good until my balun cooked at the first hour mark.
Thankfully I managed to lash something up to struggle on with.
G4FNL
I used the local University site. Rig was an FT1000MP + TL922 Amp and a
choice of antennae: a 265ft Dipole @ 60ft or Inv L @ 70ft, plus
Beverage to the NW for RX. I used SD for logging – and got a
surprise when I worked Paul EI5DI and discovered that there’s an
extra comment that pops up in SD when you work him!
G4HSO
My first CW contest for some time. This, together with a new
temporary dipole and new WinTest logging created a learning curve.
However, a very enjoyable contest and I hope to be back for both
events next year.
G4RCG
Started great worked nearly 100 in the 1st hour, then it started
raining which brought with lots of static which made life miserable. I
used N1MM for the 1st time in this test which made things interesting,
found it ok but for me SD would have been better.
G4TSH
Thanks to Bob G4BAH for use of station.Poor condx to DX and lots of static in EU. Fewer people on than last time.
GM0GAV
Went to the pub to watch the Scotland match before - a few busted calls no doubt!
GM3JKS
Could only afford time to do about 1 hour. SD worked flawlessly
GM3YEH
Good activity early in the contest, but very slow later.
GM4AFF
Sorry, but sadly I only had a little while available for this contest
GM4BRN (Op GM3ZBE)
First entry in this contest, good fun rather slow in the last 90 mins.
GM4FAM
First 160m contest for years - very enjoyable!
GW3SQX
Can't compete with the big guns!
K1ESE
First try with the big quad and a contest. Didn't know what to
expect. Made first QSO an hour before sunset. Thanks to all
that pulled my signal out of the noise.
M0AAA (Op G0VQR)
Very hard going. The antenna is not good enough. I cannot get the
height I need - 35 feet at the centre to about 25 at the ends, firing
north/south.
ON3AD
These are my first steps in a 160 meter Contest
OZ7BQ
Running K2 and an 8 meters high toploaded vertical in a very small garden. Please note this logger did not accept PH!!
PA0FAW
Could not take part all the time, condx were poor and as far as I can
judge not much activity, but my indoor longwire is of course not very
good.
S57DX
Terrible QRN here
S59T
Just to give out some points
VE3CUI
The ratio of U.K. stations CALLED to those that were actually WORKED
was about 3 to 1 this year --- again! (Sigh). There were some VERY big
signals emanating from "G"-land this year...alas & a lack their
ears did not equal the signals they were sending out...!
