The 2007 Sprint Contests were an experiment aiming to capitalise on the success of the 80m Club Championships, whilst providing a new twist on the operating style normally associated with domestic contesting. Two separate CW and SSB contests were held to introduce the popular Sprint format to UK contesters.

The feedback has been mostly positive. The major criticism of the events was that there was simply not enough activity, at least not enough to last 90 minutes. So the contacts and log submissions by stations outside the UK was most welcome. By introducing a club element for future events it’s hoped UK participation will increase.

Most stations quickly got to grips with the changing frequency element to the contests, and the exchange consisting of both callsigns, and no required RS(T). There was plenty of room to manoeuvre in both events, with apparently no disruption to any other ongoing contacts.

In the CW contest, experienced sprinter Dave G4BUO managed to find a few more elusive QSOs than his peers, with G3TXF, G3LET, G4FNL and G4IRN all finishing with the same score in joint second place.

For the SSB event, congratulations to Steve G3ZVW, who was just ahead of EUSprint regular Steve GW4BLE in second place, and Dave G3KLH and Adrian MW1LCR who were joint third.

The exchange of a name or nickname was surprisingly contentious. Despite being a regular part of EU and NA Sprint contests, there was some concern that those using very short names like ‘Ed’ had some advantage. In practice I don’t think this made a difference. At the other extreme, this part of the exchange gave some operators a chance to show their sense of humour. So take a bow, Llewelyn (G3RSD) and Marmaduke (M0ZIP).  On both modes, the name exchange was certainly not error free.

The Sprints will be back next year after the 80m Club Championships conclude. The 2008 rules will be published on the RSGB Contest Committee website. Thanks to all who took part and made comments and suggestions.

2E0KOP
New contest type for me, good learning contest. Please run more as most enjoyable

F5LEN
Unfortunatly bad conditions on 80m tonight. Heavy QRN.
Anyway a funny event and it's always better than tv hi.

G0ADH
A first for me with this sprint format.
Definitely not one of the easiest contest.

G3GLL
SD worked fine. First time  with sprint contest. I think they could catch on !

G3JRM
Interesting and new (to me) format. Must read the rules more carefully in future as I gave out RST for a while early on so apologies to all. SD ran faultlessly as usual excellent!!

G3KAF
A really enjoyable contest. Hope for more.

G3LET
Without the EU participation, this would have been a little thin on the ground. But it does take some getting used to . . .
Conditions ideal - all the QRP boys were very readable

G3OLB/M
Operated from the car during a spot of caravanning in North Cornwall

G3RCM
I liked this one although we had some technical problems to start with that meant a late start and took a bit to get into the swing of it then it was all over!

G3TXF
This first attempt at a UK Sprit was well below critical mass for it to zing as a contest. Less like a sprint, more like a leisurely amble. But am looking forward to the next one!  Anyway, who are these jokers called ED (twice), LLEWELYN and  MARMADUKE?

G3VQO
A fairly gentle introduction to the art of “Sprinting”.  I think a bit more activity would have made things much more fun, as it was slow going at times. I wonder what kept people away. Was it the unfamiliar format, a later-than-optimum announcement, or, surely not, Champions League football?
There seemed to be two, subtly different, versions of the
exchange. One was the suggested form on the HFCC
website, whilst the other was that used in other sprints.
Still, we all seemed to understand each other, so no problem.
I think the format should return next year as a
better-publicised series of events.

G3VYI
Good fun searching then QRZ/ then Net/ start again!
Activity a bit low ?More publicity as good contest!

G3WVG
100W FT1000MP Dipole.. Good fun for 15mins .. Then I'm afraid boredom took over.

G3ZGC
On holiday in a fixed caravan at Combe Haven, Hastings.
Running a 120 ft wire up at a massive 7 foot above ground!
Just 10w from an IC703. Using Paper Log (well I was on holiday!)
And no earth! Running off a bicycle battery!

G4BUO
QRN made copy difficult at times. More activity needed!

G4EBK
A bit short of stations taking part. Not in the October Radcom
contest listing could be a reason, not every one reads UK
contest web site.

G4ERW
Managed the last 20 mins. Plenty of space!

G4FNL
Activity levels a little low - but probably to be expected with a new contest. I made a few errors in the exchanges - which I hope will be resolved when the contest has run a few times and the format is better understood by everyone. A bit slow but fun

G4OGB
Shades of Hopscotch in the late 80's! Several prefer to S&P evidently. SD performed well.

GM4OSS
Lost 40 minutes during the contest due to antenna problems. This was my first go at a Sprint contest it felt strange to begin with but I will take part if there are more next year. So see you all Feb 08

GW0ETF
Not too many stations audible here; closer examination of
log showed I must have sometimes been qsying and then unintentionally  returning too close to previous frequency for next qso - one for the adjudicators I guess.
Don't agree with random aliases for the 'name' eg 'Ed'

GW4BLE
Screwed up  first couple of  contacts - F-keys configured wrong, put '*' in macro fields instead of '%'. Had to drop out of logging programme and edit the config files. Grrrr.  Thanks to RSGB for putting this on, with some tweaking here and there let's hope it gets more support. Looking forward to SSB - CW isn't really my mode!

M3WCK
Took me 22 min to make first call. Little or no activity in QRS section - so had to operate at higher speed than comfortable with. Good experience-- and think the format is fairer than CC in Spring

PA3AM
Nice contest, as Sprint contests are exciting! I was quite late,
could only join the last 15 minutes, but hope to join the SSB version as well. I can't wait for the official introduction!!
SSB Soapbox

G0ADH
Definitely not going to be one of my favourites.

G0VGS
Great event if somewhat sparse.  More of a walk than a
sprint at times but good fun!  More please!

G3KAF
Super contest. Very friendly with name exchange. Let's have more.

G3OLB
Difficult not to cause QRM to those chatting on the band!

G3RCM
Great fun lets have some more!

G3TXF
Two VFOs aren't enough in this contest! I found the best tactic was to listen to two (but preferably more!) loud CQers, and hope that someone weak that I hadn't worked before would call them, and then hopefully pounce rather calling CQ myself!

G3VQO
It was fun for the first half-hour or so. Then, as with all SSB contests, I started to lose interest. After forty-five minutes I decided that I had worked everyone that I had heard anyway, so went to watch TV.

G3ZQH
My first sprint contest. Enjoyable format- just right for a weekday evening. Tricky to get hang of the exchanges for first dozen or so QSOs- not helped by my logging software refusing to accept any more than three letters for the name exchange. Definitely felt 'sporty', a bit like a frantic game of ping-pong. On the downside, it was difficult for casual participants to get involved becasue of the complicated rules.

G4ARI
Different and now I can put names to callsigns

G4BUO
Had a 37-minute break as the level of participation, though not bad for the first event, just wasn't high enough to sustain my interest!

G4FAL
I loved the format. Let's do some more.

G4FNL
Activity levels very low. Probably because it's a new contest. Still slipping into bad habits of automatically sending a 59 report - and stopping part the way through. Thanks to all for the QSO's

G4GSA
Good fun

G4HSU
Part of Cray Valley Radio Society entry, Doublet antenna, about 6m ASL

G4TQF
Very Interesting concept.

G8MIA
Not many stations on and no big signals.

GW4BLE
Great fun!

M0AFJ
Good fun little activity 3600-3650

M0COP
Enjoyed the contest once I had got used to the qso
format, looking forward to the next one.

M1PTR
Just caught the last half hour and quickly got into it. Thank you organisers, it was Great Fun!.

M3RYB
Good fun; first real go at a contest; SD easy to use

M5AAV/P
Fun, even with 10watts

PA3AM
Again a nice contest. Despite QRM I've worked 30 stations.
I would really like to join these kins of contests in 2008
Although I prefer the CW version, this SSB contest was also geat fun.
