Second Ropoco Contest 2008

Forty-seven logs were received for this year’s RoPoCo2, slightly down on the 2007 total. This was a hard-fought contest in which the top four all submitted error-free logs. There was nothing to separate Mick Puttick G3LIK and Tim Raven G4ARI, leaders with 560 points, and they also share the G3XTJ Memorial Trophy for the highest placed entrant with a perfect log.

The G5MY Trophy, awarded to the entrant with the highest aggregate score from both RoPoCo events, goes to Clive Penna GM3POI with a total of 1280 points. Clive’s win was by the slender margin of just one additional QSO in each event from Ed Taylor GW3SQX.

Thanks to everybody who entered, and to MM0DFZ for a useful checklog. An asterisk alongside the callsign indicates an error-free log.

Les Allwood, G3VQO

G0ADH
Not very busy but still a great contest.

G0IBN
I had to keep checking power/swr to see if I was getting out - very quiet,my locals missing again

G0MTN
Usual story - quite busy first hour, much slower in the second. Two 'gotaways' I heard working others - how many others did I miss?

G0WBC
Very enjoyable but a bit slow in the second hour

G3GLL
SD worked fine. Started late - most of the regulars seemed to be going well !

G3HEJ
FT-ONE,  264ft Inverted-Vee. A nice gathering for RoPoCo.  Almost all stations between 3520 & 3545, making weaker stations hard to dig out, whilst 3545 - 3570 almost dead here. In my humble opinion, this is a REAL contest for serious CW operators.  It certainly challenges my memory skills, whilst being hit with 30 - 35wpm bursts of postcode!  A GREAT event.

G3JJZ
I do believe the average operating speed has dropped so there appear to be fewer corrupted codes -
They are learning at last!!!   A good time as usual. I still use pen and paper on air, then SD post contest.

G3JRM
some very big signals heard here though not enough to improve my totals and of course some very unfamiliar post codes but all very enjoyable

G3KKP
Not participated for several years - found it very quiet.  Within about six qso's I noticed that my location had changed.  Some very weird post codes.  I thought that everyone knew the format by now - apparently not !

G3KNU
Many must have stayed in bed, wish I had.

G3LDI
Had to back-date N1MM to get it to work RoPoCo, then fouled up the first two QSO's.

G3LHJ
Usual fun with the strange Postal codes at times, was pushed to find stations that I had not worked at
the end.

G3LIK
Last hour very slow. Some weird changes to Post Codes came through again Nice to see some M3 calls in doing some QSO's Lot of favourties as always

G3PDH
Interesting contest but must be a nightmare to check!

G3RFH
Conditions seemed very poor.

G3ZGC
For a change no noises here. Sorry G3HKO someone CQ'ed right on top of you so never made it with you.
Rig 1C7700 150w to 132 ft wire wrapped into 55 ft garden. Up about 40 ft. Well, I received what was sent but some strange codes received!

G3ZRJ
Very slow going this session. Good sigs from GM and heard several Eus at good strength. Fingers crossed Ropoco in 2009 will be more lively

G4AIU
Good fun - as usual! SD performed very well. First time I have logged my own post-code!

G4ARI
Thanks for a very enjoyable contest as normal. Activity seemed down a little, perhaps due to holidays
How about limiting power out to 100 watts for next year after all this is an inter-G contest and 100 watts is
considered enough power for the 80 Club Contests? This might also be viewed as the RGSB HFCC showing their "Green credentials"? Also considering the number of contestants, perhaps setting the contest bandwidth from 3520 to 3550 so that might be a considerate change which would be welcomed
by the non-contest fraternity? See you next year

G4BJM
Activity a bit down on usual, only Six QSOs in the last hour. Two heard but not worked: GW3KDB and G4UQU (called twice).

G4CKH
Did'nt seem that much activity, allthough what was about was strong on a nice quiet band here.

G4EBK
First hour 40Q's, second 12.

G4FAL
A poor attempt from Sheffield - excuse late Saturday night at a party

G4MEM
Slightly thrown by receiving '000 000' as a postcode. Excellent chance to practice contest QSO's without
computer keying. Good fun on a Sunday morning.

G4OOC
Started late but really enjoyed it. SD was great easy to use Recommend it to anyone

G4PIQ
Just 20 minutes on and off operating between rain showers while clearing up after EU HFC the previous evening. Unfortunately didn't have time to stay at site and compete properly! All hand keying!

G4RCG
Nice and steady as normal, still think that 8.00 on a sunday morning is the wrong time to have this test.
Was well miffed when a well known GM contester did not confirm his post code he gave and just flew off hope I got it right. All in all enjoyable as ever just need more stations to have a go

GM3JKS
A struggle trying to penetrate the activity south of border. Stuck it out until the end and caught a few latecomers.

GM3POI
This Contest really should be moved to the evening so as to pick up all the new CC recruits, not enough
activity in the AM

GM4FAM
Great little contest marred only by lack of activity

GW3SQX
Not such a good total this time.  Not sure why -- same rig and antenna as
last Ropoco.  Perhaps condx didn't favour South Wales.  73.

M0AAA
Sorry I worked for to long Saturday night. I found it very hard getting up on Sunday. Only managed 3 this
time. See you next year.

M3WCK
A bit chaotic but maybe that was the intent

M3ZYN
Condx ok. 10w is always a bit of a battle when competing against other s&p adherers!
SD skill improving - a definite plus!
