TROPHIES (*)
Flight Refuelling Trophy - Leading
team - Lichfield ARS
Lichfield Trophy - Leading
single-operator individual station - D Beattie, G3BJ
CHECKLOGS:
G3VQO MU0FAL G7RTI G3SET RN3RQ UA3LHL GM3SVW
ADJUDICATOR'S COMMENTS
For many stations, it was the best SSB AFS in a long time. Individual
winner Don G3BJ ended with a final total of 464 good QSOs, shattering
previous 400+ QSO records set by Andy G4PIQ in the
mid-1990’s. G0AAA in second place, operated by Ian G3WVG
also broke the elusive 400 QSO barrier – well done.
Whilst the contest is often berated as being a “Midlands QSO
Party”, the top 20 stations comprise entrants from the South East
and South West of England, Wales, and two from Scotland including Clive
GM3POI in Orkney.
The combination of antenna system, operating skill, location and indeed
luck all contribute to higher scores – a great example of where
it all came together this year is Bob M3RCV who notched up 200 QSOs
with 10 watts. Many stations, from all parts of the UK, commented on
the high levels of QRM which is sadly unavoidable with the level of
interest the contest attracts each year.
In the refreshed team competition, now with 4 entrants per team for
both CW and SSB AFS events, many time winners Lichfield ARS win the
Flight Refuelling ARS trophy, with the DeMontfort University and
Bristol CG following.
Log checking again revealed a large spread in the accuracy of submitted
logs, which cost some stations several places. Also, small penalties
have been applied to stations monitored by the contest committee who
were found to operating outside of the frequency band specified in the
rules, or making contest contacts before the contest began.
Thanks to everyone who took part.

Really enjoyed Contest new Logging Prog. required!
2E0XIS
suffering from high VSWR mainly worked Search & pounce
2E1GUA
Good fun
G0AAA
A great way to spend four hours on a Saturday afternoon!
G0ADH
So many stations - So little space - Hard work at times
G0DVJ
Good activity levels. Deliberate jamming by anti-contester for 45 mins. Plenty of european stations in last hour.
G0EVT
Plenty of active stations
G0EYR
Good session SD worked well!
G0GFQ
Better than last year, but I don't think the vertical is exactly suited to inter G activity
G0GRI
Getting used to using SD
G0HSA
Nice to make 100 qso's in a first attempt at this contest. Will definitely have a go next time around
G0HVQ
My first time is AFS, very enjoyable.
G0KDS
About 80/90W to a wire antenna at 7m. Band was noise free until
last 45 mins then 5/9+20 blanket of hiss covered most of it.
Enjoyed it more, usually run QRP
G0KYA
Tough with 10W and indoor antenna! A lot of QRM towards the end.
G0KYS
Managed to hold a frequency for the first three hours - a first for me! Wasn't always productive though
The skip appeared to go long in the last 20 minutes with GMs and DLs only worked.
G0LHZ
Slow in 2nd half
G0LOC
An experience!
G0MRH
Conditions were very poor for most of the time which didn't help when I only had a few minutes at
the end of the contest to make a few contacts. On the good side it was nice to work an unexpected
number of stations in Scotland.
G0NQZ
Rig - FT897D 100W. Ant - G5RV
G0OKF
As ever at my location - noisy. Worked more that I expected. SD worked as ever =without fault= the operator did not.
G0RXA
Joined in at the very last minute and managed to spend a few hours helping my team.
G0UAI
Rig - TS50 100W. Ant - G5RV
G0UGO
SD failure with Windows Vista so had to retype everything into this!!
G0VBT
Very noisy at this QTH First time using SD very good. Yes enjoyed it very good
G0VDZ
Mayhem as usual. Did not score as well as last year. But still good fun
G0VFW
Transceiver IC-756 PRO O/P 100 Watts. Antenna G5RV at 12M
G0VYR
Wall to wall noise
G1BHR
wall to wall contacts just difficult to sort them out
G1RNZ
Used SD logger worked very well.
G3GJW
Sounded busy my handicap being I could not check for dupes on a PC.
G3HEJ
SD was very good for post logging
G3JIR
First entry in AFS SSB
G3JJZ
RIG - IC756 PRO III 100Watts. ANTENNAS - 85'
50 in the first hour, but only 42 in the other 3. It just went from bad to worse!
G3LHJ
Hard work breaking through the wall of central UK QRM but it was fun - condx went a bit funny at the last
half hour of contest - lots of activity and loud noises from the big boys CU next year 73 Derrick
G3LIK
Start was good but towards the end condtions changed with only the Scottish stations being heard
Great to use SD for logging
G3LVP
Equipment TS 850, 400W, Inverted V trap dipole @ 30ft. Band conditions, Bedlam!
G3NPF
Usual wall-to-wall QRM with some HUGE signals, some of which were rather wide.
G3PHO
A very hectic affair. Our first club entry in this contest. Will do again!
G3RCM
Band was in good shape with plenty of activity, some very strong
signals around. Running with a FT2000, 100 watts to a trap dipole
for 80 and 40m Logging with Wintest.
G3RRL
Plenty of stations good conditions should have worked more.
G3RSD
used sd great
G3RXQ
K2+ KW1000 400W. Doublet at 40'. 2 x Pennant Receive Antennas. WinTest
G3SNU
As usual very enjoyable
G3SVD
A very good contest, lots and lots of GMs and plenty of stations from the
G3TBK
My highest ever score but still not good enough. Dipole at 70 ft.
G3TKF
A natural break 45mins before the end was my undoing - lost the run frequency and then all went down hill.
G3TXF
Keeping up the momentum on SSB for even four hours is quite a battle.
Claimed score is over 40 Q's down on last year. Must shout louder!
G3UFY
RIG - FT1000MP + Ranger 811H. ANTENNAS - Dipole
G3UJE
Poor first hour due to 3720 region being jam packed with QRM. Rate
picked up a bit after that. Enjoyable contest though.
G3UKV
First time achieved 100 QSOs in an hour ever ! What a racket (or is
that racquet ?!). Usual skip change esp. lat half hour. Gs faded right
out. Most enjoyable - many old friends QSOd
G3VCA
Stations working less than 1 KHz apart. Not good for headaches or working weak stations.
Had to stop afer two hours.
G3VIP
RIG IC7000, 25W, INV V dipole. What a struggle with low power, some rubbish signals.
G3VYI
SD great nice condx. Worked lots of favourites going up and down band !! Good to hear some new calls
G3WQK
Rig - TS690 100W. Ant - Long Wire
G3WRR
Don't like the SSB event - hard work. A tiny antenna like mine simply isn't competitive! Skip went very long
in the last hour
G3WWS
Rig FT990 - 100W. Ant 33' inverted-L
G3YAJ
VERY NOISY
G3YEC
Had family so operating tine curtailed and frequent interupted by questions !
G3YOA
Good contest except last hour when another contest started
G3ZBU
Aerial needs to be a fair bit higher.
G3ZGC
IC775DSP 200w to 132 ft wire wrapped into 55 ft garden. Less chaos than last year. Less noise.
But I prefer CW!
G3ZHE
59+20 qrm all the time here. 756pro3 with 300w linear. 90ft doublet 30ft up. Hard work during last hour
G3ZVW
Got rather squeezed towards the end, but managed to maintain a decent rate.
G4CUS
An enjoyable contest as usual despite the QRM!
G4CWH
I'm sure that the band didn't always used to close to G towards the end
as it seems now to do. Another effect of atmospheric polution? Useful
timing with continental contest added to score quite a bit.
G4CYG
Enjoyed contest for small time available. Post-contest logged by G0MRH
G4DDX
Very busy and lots of loud signals. Shows up my poor aerial. Lost my
voice about 1700 and when I tried again at 1745 the skip had changed to
useless. Used SD as usual, could not manage without it.
G4EBK
Not my favourite mode as reflected by my low score. First two hours not bad then cdnx went down hill.
G4EOF
QRM - Headache - but really enjoyable as ever.
G4FBS
Good activity. SD performed well as usual.
G4FNL
Activity seemed much higher than for the CW contest that was on the
previous weekend. I used SD for logging. Thanks to all for the QSOs
G4KLF
used sd for first time instead of a paper log. it was a great
help and i enjoyed it once i got used to it.
found conditions down compared to cw contest a week previous Had
problems with my ant and could not load properly so wasnt able to
really get into contest. very
G4OGB
SD IS GREAT
G4RCD
Operated from Appleby-In-Westmorland, at the QTH of my Dad,
G3JYP. I was late into the shack, and missed the first few
minutes. Interesting to experience the difference in propogation
from Cumbria, compared with my home QTH in Hampshire.
G4RCG
Great fun, with lots of stations coming on. Managed to keep my run
frequency even though I had music played over me and several other
attempted jammers. Lots of M3's and 2E's as well which was good. Once
the daylight went lots of EU's came on to give points which was a bonus
G4VUD
very noisy conditions, loads of continental stations
G4WGE
Utter pandemonium. Finding a run frequency was virtually impossible. It
seemed to be a case of finding of spot of tolerable QRM! Lets hope AFS
doesn't get more popular.
G6AY
Part time entry (just over two hours) to support the 3As team.
G6fop
Very Busy Contest,
G7VRK
All was going well until the QRM started & band got very noisy as darkness fell but enjoyed very
much see you all next year
G8VHI
I had QRM for over 1 hour at 59+++ sending in CW Test. or sending me back to myself. It killed my score!
GM0ELP
Who would have thought you could have so much fun on 80m during the
day. Brilliant fun in a very competative contest. Worked all over the
UK and out into the EU in the last couple of hours. Not as good
conditions for GM as it was last year, but Qs came steadily throughout. Thanks to all who worked me.
GM3GKJ
Nice to take part in the AFS again. Due to various reasons missed 2006 & 2007.
GM3JKS
Found it difficult to penetrate the morass of stations. Too many stations for the available band space
GM3SVW
These QSOs were made by a one-man expedition and were intended as a
check-log, but someone has to prop up the bottom of the table. Include
in the list if the log comes out OK. SD would not produce a .LOG file
so suspect my Cabrillo
GM3WIJ
Very hard going indeed. Antenna needs improving for 80M contesting
GM3WOJ
First hour dire, then things improved ! 73
GM3WUX
Conditions not a s Good as last year. The band didn't seem to open up anywhere like as well.
GM4BKV
Good contest - very hard going though.
GM4GVK
Only running 5W so conditions very difficult. Finished early
GM4OBD
Conditions seemed one-sided. Many stations heard at good strength but they had difficulty in copying.
SD worked faultlessly which is more than can be said for the operator!!!
GM8MHU
Happy wth SD - pity about conditions - Hard going.
GW4FCV
20DBw - Trap Dipole
M0AFJ
Great fun pity about unexpected visitors after 2 Hrs
M0BPQ
Bedlam! Not much fun with 100w, only time I tried to run I got QRMd by
SSTTV from DL. Gave up after 100 QSOs as S&P had hit its limit... IC 756Pro, dipole, 100W
M0CNP
Conditions for the last hour were very poor but overall the contest was
very enjoyable though disappointed with my personal score
M0DHO
Nice to see so much activity. QRM was amazing at times. Hard to find or keep a clear frequency.
M0FRH
Use SD as always brilliant. Thank you to all who worked me.
M0GAV
Poor start to the year but things can only get better!!
M0GHQ
Thanks for the good fun 73
M0GNW
First attempt at AFS on 80m. First attempt at using SD
M0JEC
Had to work late and joined the contest only for the dying minutes.
M0JQK
First time I have used it and found it very good. Really enjoyed the contest. I will be using all the time for future contests
M0MCX
Band died 30 minutes from time - or was it my brain? Great fun as always, thanks for the ride :)
M0OXO
1st Entry in AFS and had a great time great coditions for the first couple of hours then it all just died
on me
M0PTO
Operated from G3PDH'S shack.
M0RBG
Good conditions, SD great help
M0RHS
First attempt with new radio hope to improve with time
M0RNE
Only on air for first 30 minutes
M0SDT
First time doing a contest and also using 80m with wire. I would
normally use my beam in which 17m is my best band. it was an enjoyable
event since I have not used my radio in about 6 months. Hope to do
better next time
M0SPC
Frantic as always great fun
M0TIF
Very enjoyable well done to all organisers.
M0XJP
very enjoyable contest Condx changed noticably during last hour and very noisy
M1PTR
Gets the contest season off to a great start. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
M3ENF
Rig - FT847 10W. Ant - G5RV
M3NLK
Enjoyed the contest. Hope to take part next year. Found SD very good.
M3RCV
Amazed at the Q total with only 10w (from a 1000MP), but Inter-G
conditions were very, very good until about an hour from the end.
Tnx to all those who worked me.
M3UOW
My first contest. I really enjoyed it!
M3XYD
This is a first ever contest entry
M3YOM
This was my first contest, had a great time. Lots of fun.
MM0BCR
I found SD very easy to use
MM0BHX
100 Watts and a bit of wire is not enough for this contest. Enjoyed participating never the less !
MM0DFZ
SD easy to use
MM0GPZ
Running an inverted L wasn't the best for the test, but have to make
do. Conditions got better all the way through and I was enjoying it at
the end and made 79 Q's in last hour, my best hour. I''ll definitely
have a dipole for next year. Roll on 80m CC.
MM0ROV
A challenging contest but enjoyed the experience.
MM5AHO
worked all I heard over local noise level of S9
