First 70MHz 2005

The level of activity was slightly down on 2004. However 94 stations were active from G, GD, GI, GM, GW and EI. Conditions were average with deep QSB and high noise levels causing difficulty. Only one contact in excess of 500kms was achieved and 20 more at distances greater than 400kms. A number of entrants will notice significant reductions in their score due to logging inaccuracies. A number of contacts were made on AM and FM demonstrating the growth in activity on those modes.

Congratulations go to Bryn G4DEZ and Trevor G2KF/P for their section wins. The Newquay & District ARS were the leading low power station. These stations together with the runners up Bill G3JYP and Ron GW4EVX will receive certificates.

Many thanks to G4HYG for a very useful check log.

Roger, G4BVY

Comments from the logs:

G0OIW
A bit quiet, but an encouraging response to my AM calls - 5 of 13 QSOs were AM.

G1KHX/P
Very deep QSB to the East. No GMs heard. Had to stop generator in mid QSO with G3RSX to let a horse past (Very dodgy). WX hazy sunshine.

G2KF
Lots of meteor pings lost GM and no real DX.

G3FIJ
QSB. Very hard work with QRP. Best DX missed was G2KF/P in Cornwall !

G3IKR
Average – usual QSB

G3JYP
Possibly above average but my wretched noise is back making it difficult to work anything east of due south.

G3MEH
Reasonable activity with several new calls worked. Average conditions with deep, slow QSB.

G3TCU
Conditions & activity about average, high QRN level at this QTH.

G3VQO
Must be a good /P site - first time I've worked more than 2 stations in a 4m contest !!!

G3YJX
About 1 hours operation.

G4ADV
A little Quite in Cornwall.

G4DEZ
Good activity no Es but some surprise UK DX. Thanks to all those who worked me.

G4HYG
Normal, deep QSB, low noise level at this QTH. First serious contest effort for over 20 years! Will re-join RSGB soon!

G6GVI
Mild and dry, with some sunshine.

G8SRL
Conditions were average with no DX. There was at times some deep QSB. The activity was down a little. I think this contest is too soon after the Cumulatives and too similar. Maybe it could be swapped with the 70 MHz CW contest in May.

GW3HWR
I had a catastrophic computer crash soon after the contest and it is just back on line, but since I made a mess of my serial numbers I am concerned that your checks may lead to other entrants being penalised.

GW4EVX
Conditions average with fair level of activity except for the final hour!
