432MHz Affiliated Societies Contest 2005

Entry numbers this year were significantly up on those for 2004. Propagation conditions generally were nothing special, with deep QSB on longer distance signals. Despite that several entrants made QSO’s at distances in excess of 500km. Activity was reasonable with 138 different callsigns logged and most entrants making more QSO’s in the four hours of this year’s contest than in last year’s six hour contest. The standard of logging was variable with 13 error free logs, more than a third of the total, but three other entrants lost their best DX QSO on adjudication.

Congratulations go to Reg Woolley, G8VHI, and to Roger Piper, G3MEH, as winner and runner up in the Single operator Fixed section respectively, while Ken Punshon, G4APJ, is awarded a certificate for being the leading SF entrant using 25W or less and a single aerial. In the Others section Dave Wood, G4CQR, braved the weather to operate portable gaining a commanding lead over the South Birmingham Radio Society’s multi-operator entry, G8OHM. Alan Copperwaite, M0DDC, operating portable, is awarded the certificate for the leading entrant using 25W or less and a single aerial. The AFS section was closely contested by the four clubs entering a full team of three with Sutton & Cheam RS just taking the winner’s certificate and Harwell ARS ‘A’ team taking second place. South Birmingham RS turned in a creditable single member team entry from their club station G8OHM.

All the points go to the Chelmsford amateur radio soc club or CARS. I was late on the radio but I had 9qso in one hour not bad yes.

G0BRV

When's the OM going to fix the beam??!!

G1OGY

Poor at start, slowly improved

G3FIJ

Deep QSB particularly on N-S contacts

G3JJZ

I just hate being restricted to a vert.!!! I must repair the beams.

G3MEH

Reasonable activity this year, thanks for the support. Conditions were very average with deep QSB on longer paths.

G3NNG

Poor conditions

G3VQO/P

A spur-of-the-moment decision to visit a suitable hill-top. Band seemed noisier than usual. Worked all I heard!!!

G3WHK

Conditions fairly flat - could not break out of the 300km barrier - Some strange multipath reception when beaming West!!

G3ZPB

Antenna rotator found jammed from start. Surrey Radio Contact Club entry together with G8IYS.

G4APJ

Pretty poor conditions, but encouraging level of activity!

G4CQR/P

Good conditions, reasonable weather

G6GVI/P

Damp and drizzly, but mild and calm. Propagation stable, with little fading noted. I was also QRV on 2m and 4m - hence the gaps in my log.

G6UBM

Only on for a short time, did not hear some of the stations I expected.

G8CUL

Hard going with lots of QSB

G8IYS

Lively & interesting - good fun. No hyper dx but ok. Surrey Radio Contact Club entry together with G3ZPB.

G8OHM

Better than last year, but then it was an all time low!

G8SRL

Conditions were only average with occasional enhanced paths. However there was plenty of activity. I like the four hour format. My only problem was the lack of a working mast-head pre-amp so I lost several QSOs.

G8VHI

Wow Life north of the M62 no less than 3 gm's with 1 new loc io76 was a nice surprise.

GW4HBK

Quiet conditions, nothing to the north

M0DDT

Disasters all along - rig down to 1W(!) changed to FT-817 (2.5W) added linear to 25W. Blew preamp....

M3RCV

Good to see how far my 5w would go!

M5ADF

Mostly local contacts - occasional bursts around the country
