May 2006 UHF/SHF Contest Results

This year there was little dramatic to report in terms of conditions - either from in terms of weather or propagation although there was some rainscatter evident on 10 GHz in particular. Unfortunately activity from the UK was not great and this is reflected in a somewhat reduced number of entries.

It was remarkably close at the top of the Open section and would have been closer still had the South Birmingham team not had a total failure of their new solid state 400W 23cm system early on Sunday morning. This not only loses them QSOs on 23cm, but many QSOs on the higher bands because 23cm is a key band to pass QSOs up from.

As usual, in spite of the conditions, there was some great DX worked - aided by increasing ERPs on many bands. This time, increasing QSO totals and powers levels on 24 GHz are particularly noticeable. We also had nearly had our first channel crossing contest QSO on 24 GHz with M1CRO/P hearing PI4Z, but unfortunately the Colchester group had suffered a transmit relay failure making the QSO only one way. Just a reminder that one-way QSOs on 13cm and above only count for half points. On 23cm and 13cm, G3XDY's QSOs to DM7A in JO60 at 837km are remarkable for flat conditions and GD0EMG's QSO with F1PYR/P at 728km on 3cm is also a great distance. We only have a single QSO on 47 GHz in the event, but 92km shows the way that this band is moving as well.

The battle at the top of the Open Section continues with the Colchester CG's 7 band entry beating the South Birmingham RS 8 band entry through consistent strong band performance. The Northern Lights deserve mention for getting really close to these leading scores from a much less favourable location on the Isle of Man, and put in particularly strong performances on 13cm and 3cm, winning or nearly winning the band from a location far from the centres of activity in Europe. In the Single Operator Fixed Section, John Quarmby, G3XDY maintains his domination, leaving Neil Underwood, G4LDR's entry in second place.

Andy Cook, G4PIQ.
