May 144MHz 2006

As in 2005, this contest was once again beset by very bad weather and poor conditions. In particular gale force winds made portable operation very difficult in some parts of the country. Well done to all those who braved the conditions and put in an entry.

The A1 contest group continue their winning streak in the Multi-Op section, helped by their impressive array of aerials. Second place this year goes to the Five Bells Group, an excellent result from their "home station".
Bryn, G4DEZ wins the Single Operator 24 hour section, from Steve, M5BFL who once again takes second spot.
Steve G3ZVW wins the 6 hour single operator fixed station section this year from Roger G3MEH, with a good score from only 4 hours of operation.
The Ayr Amateur Radio Group were winners of the 6 hour others section, with a very impressive score from their remote location. At the other end of the UK the Moors CG took second place.
Graham, G3YJR and Hilton, MW0OPS were the highest placed fixed stations running 25w and a single antenna in the SF and 6S sections respectfully.

If you have never tried Google earth, the satellite imaging software from Google, then I can highly recommend you give it a try. You can download the software, free, from here. Once you have installed it, click on this link. This will add place marks for all the contacts made during this contest. You will be able to see the whereabouts of all the entrants and all the QSO's that took place. Note, however, that the locations marked are not the exact positions of the stations, but the position of the centre of their Locator Square.

Event beset by personnel problems, single setup, dual Op. Condx appalling, weather likewise. So it goes. Interestingly, excluding "World Cup" stations, a full 20% of contacts were with callsigns worked for the first time.

Strong winds prevented me raising the mast on saturday evening and family commitments limited me to 4 hrs on sunday. I went on with the intention of just giving points away but got bored with S & P so started calling CQ and don't seem to have done too badly so here's a four hour entry. Conditions here seemed absolutely dire on sunday morning and was surprised to work no IO83 stations

Condx not wonderful, so this was a struggle! Only 1 continental station heard :-( , but UK stations heard from most squares. Better fixed station than out backpacking though - it chucked it down round here!

Wow, the strongest winds that we've know in this contest. Planned to have 4*9 ele, put 2*9 ele and then replaced that with a single 9 ele before the contest started due to the wind, couldn't even wind the mast up to full height due to 55mph gusts. Not bad activity given the wx, some continental activity.

Generally poor conditions with lots of QSB although some occasional DX. No equipment problems and test of antennas for St. kilda proved satisfactory. Very quiet overnight - thanks go to our night watchman G4YHF. Generally a pleasing final score for a home station with associated luxurieZZZZZZZZZZZZ zzzzzzzz

We were operating with a much smaller scale station than normal. We couldn't secure our site for the whole 24 hours so we could only operate for about 10. Terrible weather and conditions meant we had to keep the antenna low. Looking forward to NFD

The windy weather limited my choice of aerial so I running just one 9 element Tonna instead of 2 x 9 element Vargardas. Conditions were not very good with occasional short openings.
