432MHZ Low Power 2008

After 2007's low entry level for this contest, it was pleasing to see many more logs being submitted this year. 28 entries were received in total, which is 55% up on last year.

Unfortunately conditions were described generally as poor, and rain was reported in a lot of areas.

The A1 Contest Group G4ZAP/P continue to be unbeaten in the Open section, making it seven years in a row now. Five Bells Group G4SIV took second place.

Bryn Lewellyn G4DEZ won the Single Operator fixed section, with Bob Harrison G8HGN taking second place.

Warrington Contest Group (Reserve Green Caravan Team) M0DSA/P were clear winners in the Single Operator Others section making a great score, with Burton Amateur Radio Club taking second place. Warrington's score was actually significantly higher than A1's score in the Open section. Had Warrington entered the Open section, A1's unbeaten record would have been broken.

Frank Laanen PE1EWR is awarded the certificate for leading overseas station.

There is often discussion in VHF contesting circles that it's impossible to win any contest unless you're in the South East of the UK. It is worth noting that in this contest none of the section winners were in the South East, and the highest scores were made from IO93.

Comments from the logs
G0JJF
Lots of deep QSB. Rather slow going.
G0VFW
Even worse conditions than the 144MHz low power contest. Probably would not have made any difference running 100Watts!! Thanks to all the /P stations who endured the weekend.
G1KHX
Very slow going from here, as usual.
G3ATZ/P
Terrible, awful, low activity, poor conditions. WX ok, but very hard work.
G3NFC/P
Bit flat nice WX
G3WIR/P
Rain lots and little propagation. Very few stations on pity really
G3XBM/P
Poor to average
G3YDY
2 Hours Operation only. Good Fun
G4DEZ
Poor conditions and very hard work with just 25 watts. Only 5 countries and lost GM4JTJ twice.
G4OCO/P
Heard more than I could work, conditions not too good and please beam down towards the south west please, there is good multipliers down here.
G4SIV
Better than 2m Low Power but still only average. First time in ???? years of contesting I've seen our "raw/base" score as an "exact" number - [ie 10,000] - ALSO a good job we had a backup to relieve the boredom - a P/Code map to colour in !!!
G4YTD
Sunny with an increasing wind. The 70cm antenna was strapped to the garden fence on a pole. Had to take it down at 10.30 local time as the bugee chords were starting to fray with the constant swaying of the pole!! Dear Jim, Please can you fix it for me to have planning permission for a tower??
G4ZAP/P
Pretty Average
G6GVI
Sunny spells and brief showers
G8HGN
Some DX about, but deep QSB at times.
G8LZE
Hard work.
G8VHL/P
Poor throughout, although the rain held off
G8ZRE
Worked all I could hear
M0SDA/P
20 mins late on due to preamp issues. Most of contest had no preamp.
PE1EWR
Activity used to be a bit more extensive, if I remember correctly. Anyway, I saw more activity in the Limited G contest, than in the 24-hour contest of France.... Heard F5HGO in JN15, but he couldn't hear me with 25W, unfortunately.
