144 MHz CW Contest January 1998

Reports of gale force winds and poor propagation figured in most of this year’s logs, with G1WAC suggesting a bravery award for anyone bold enough to crank up their tower for the duration.

GM4WLL the sole portable entrant, had to leave his site before the end of the contest when the access road began to disappear under fresh snow. Activity and QSO numbers were down a little for this year’s event, most likely due to the prevailing conditions.

This was the first contest to embody the new district code multipliers which have now replaced the old county codes. Most contest participants seemed to be familiar with the new system and few problems were reported. The accuracy of most of the logs was high, with around 75% of the entries on disc or via e-mail. Winners of the Open Section were the Blacksheep Contest Group M0BAA, with David Dodds GM4WLL/P the runner-up. Richard Staples G4HGI was the Single-Op Fixed winner, with G1WAC, operated by Lee Volante G0MTN, the runner-up. Charles Jordan G0PZO takes the low power honours.
