144MHz May 1998 Results

Some decent propagation and kind weather made this year’s event more interesting than in recent years for many entrants. It was also the first major contest to use the new postcode multiplier scheme – I’m pleased to report that few stations had much trouble with the new system, and almost no adverse comments were received. Some patience was needed when working non-entrants who either didn’t know their postcode, or live in one of the areas whose postcode is a single letter and needed translating to the special two-letter variant for the purposes of the contest.

Slightly lower entry levels from last year’s event – but a good scrap for the top places in the Open section, where less than 10% separated first and third places. GD0EMG, Northern Lights, held on to first place, with 5 Bells, G4SIV/P runner-up again. A special mention for G8LNC/P, who managed fourth place despite not getting on-air until 1725 GMT. The delay was apparently due to yet another ‘left it behind on the kitchen table’ incident by G8GSQ – this time it was the transverter front-end! If they’re going to do this regularly, they really should contest from somewhere that isn’t a 50-minute ferry ride from the mainland…

What can I say about the Single-op Fixed table – a commanding win by Andy G4PIQ. Dave G7RAU from the Isle of Wight came in second, and G1TWS gets the 25W/single antenna award. Stewart GM4AFF is making good use of his new site in IO86, and leads the six-hour section – a podium position for Lee G0MTN operating G4WAC.

All-change in the single-op Portable section – no G4BVY or GM4ZUK. David GM4WLL put in a good log from IO85 to take the top place, with Jim MM0BQI retaining his second place from last year (when he was MM1BGI). BRS25429 was the lone SWL entrant.

From the ‘Heroic Failures’ collection – "A disaster from start to finish’"(MM0BQI), "Linear 1 has just cooled enough to touch , can expect bank manager to call soon !" (M1CRO), "I really appreciated the extraordinary patience, perseverance, and self-control of those operators who had to struggle with my puny signal." (G4OTY), "Only half an hour late this time - not bad for deciding to do the contest 11.30 that morning!" (G4PIQ), "Rotator packed up after 2 hours!" (GW8OQV). "Wheel fell off caravan on the way to site" (G4SIV). G8LNC/P also had some comments to make, but they’re unprintable!
