432MHz Affiliated Societies Contest 1998

Despite the prevailing high pressure very few stations reported enhanced conditions with most bemoaning the low level of activity. In view of this it is surprising that the best DX recorded was the contact between G8OHM and DF2VJ over a distance of 711Km.

Amateur stations from DL, G, GI, GD, GW and PA plus F6CBH were logged with 16 entrants having contacts over 400Km.

Although the standard of logs was generally high several stations included a large amount of careless mistakes which was reflected in their scores.

A check log was submitted by Derek, 2W1EKR, and Clive, GW4VVX, who went out portable, to check out Derek's radio equipment, and set up their 19el Yagi station at 1400ft asl but still reported very little activity.

Congratulations to Keith Tatnall G4ODA, who won the single operator section operating the Spalding and District ARS station, G1DSP and also to John Quarmby, G3XDY, who came in second place after family commitments restricted John to being able to operate for only half of the contest. Third place went to Edward Turner G7NCG whose 25W to a single antenna gained him a certificate for that section ahead of Frank Howe, G3FIJ.

Last year's multi-operator winners, G8OHM, were beaten into second place by the Isle of Man ARS whose excellent score also resulted in them being the leading Affiliated Society ahead of the Reigate ATS.
