Following the demise of the 144 MHz CW Cumulative Contest, for which support had been steadily falling over the years, the 144 MHz UK Cumulatives were introduced for the first time in 1998. This new format encourages inter-G working with 5 points and a postcode multiplier for UK only contacts, but only 1 point for QSOs with continental European stations, and no distance points awarded. Any perceived geographical advantage should now favour stations closer to the UK radio activity centres.
This will be a five part event in 1999, but the late rule changes meant that only four sessions were possible in 1998. Most entrants found that first and second sessions yielded the best scores, with the fourth one seeing many entrants suffer due to appalling weather conditions. It was pleasing to note the healthy support for the format, with a number of entrants submitting logs for the first time. The standard of logging was generally good, and the relative simplicity of the scoring process makes adjudication somewhat easier too! Comments from entrants were generally very favourable but increased levels of UK activity will be the spur to popularity for this event in the future.
Winner of the SF category with the highest overall score was Robert GD4GNH - definitely not at the geographical centre of activity, with Peter G8FBG runner-up from closer to the metropolis. Tim M0AFC/P takes the open category honours with GM0CLN/P in the runner-up position, having combined two portable and one fixed entry scores. Richard G4HGI takes the low power certificate with a fine fourth place overall.
